Grove Park Inn — Asheville, North Carolina

It’s a cushy job, but somebody has to do it. My work sent me to Asheville, North Carolina with a couple of coworkers to visit a company that manufactured embroidered patches. They put us up at the Grove Park Inn, a huge hotel located in the hills outside of town.

The main inn was built in 1913. Six presidents and a bunch of other famous people have visited. The Grove Park Inn is very proud of this and offers a self-guided tour complete with a list of these people. They include:

Presidents

  • Dwight D. and Mamie Eisenhower (1947)
  • William Howard Taft (1929)
  • Franklin D. and Eleanor Roosevelt (1936)
  • Woodrow Wilson (multiple visits)
  • Herbert and Lou Hoover (multiple visits)
  • Calvin and Grace Coolidge (1921)

Other Famous People

  • Will Rogers
  • Wiley Post
  • Dr. John Harvey Kellogg
  • Charles and William Mayo
  • Art Linkletter
  • Bill Tilden
  • Bobby Jones
  • Norman Vincent Peale
  • Sandra Day O’Connor
  • Mikhail Baryshnikov
  • William Jennings Bryan
  • F. Scott Fitzgerald
  • Dinah Shore
  • Gutzon Borglum
  • Enrico Caruso
  • General John J. Pershing
  • John D.Rockefeller
  • Henry Ford
  • Harvey Firestone
  • Thomas Edison
  • Harry Houdini

We stayed for three nights. I wandered around the grounds and halls whenever I got a chance. It was very impressive, but I didn’t see anybody famous.
