Old Point Loma Lighthouse — Cabrillo National Monument — San Diego, California

I was in San Diego with coworkers for a convention. We arrived around noon the day before the convention began and headed for the coast. We parked near the visitor center at Cabrillo National Monument on the tip of Point Loma and split up, making arrangements to meet two hours later. I wandered around, looking at birds. I only spent two minutes in the lighthouse. It’s fixed up inside to look as it might have in the late 1800’s.

The lighthouse went into service in 1855 and remained in service until 1891 when a new lighthouse was built at the bottom of the bluff at the tip of the point. The base of the building is 422 feet above sea level and it’s light was visible for 39 miles out to sea. It was replaced because fog and low clouds oven hid the light.
