Raspberry Island Lighthouse — Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, Wisconsin

We took a five-day vacation in Wisconsin. We spent three nights in Bayfield, on the shore of Lake Superior. One day we took a boat ride to Raspberry Island to see the lighthouse. It has been preserved by the National Park Service, but the bank in front of the building is crumbling. A barge with a crane was moored to the dock and a caterpillar shovel was wading in the shallows. An ugly orange fence and a bulldozer cluttered the yard. But we still enjoyed ourselves.

A ranger gave us a history of the lighthouse as we stood in the gardens surrounded by out buildings. We split into groups and toured the inside of the lighthouse and went up in the tower. Only five people could fit up top at a time. We had about three minutes to look over the lake and surrounding islands before we were hurried back down the narrow stairs. Four or five rooms on the lower level were open with a few pieces of furniture and signs giving the history of the station.

I tried to get pictures while avoiding the construction in the front yard.

We stayed on the island for an hour, so I had time to wander around and take pictures.
