Notes:Edmond Dantés, a 19-year-old sailor from Marseilles, is soon to be captain of his own ship and to marry his beloved, the beautiful Mercédés. But spiteful enemies provoke his arrest on the very day planned for his wedding, and without ceremony he is condemned to lifelong solitary imprisonment in the notorious Chateau d’If. After 14 years, he escapes. He keeps his identity a secret and enters society as the Count of Monte Cristo to reclaim his lost love and exact a slow, careful revenge upon his accusers.

COMMENTS — After the successful publication of The Count of Monte Cristo, Dumas built his own Chateau de Monte Cristo, which cost over 500,000 francs. That’s a lot of hotdogs, and the expense soon caused his bankruptcy. He was forced to flee to Belgium and died penniless, but optimistic, saying of death, “I shall tell her a story, and she will be kind to me.” The original French title was Histoire d’Une Revanche, or Story of a Revenge.

Review - Count of Monte Cristo, The

A great plot idea and a strong beginning. Edmond's arrest, imprisonment and escape make great reading. But from the time that he becomes the Count, things fall apart. He is hardly involved, appearing only as a shadowy figure totally different from his earlier character and now, somehow, infallible. Far too many characters are introduced with superfluous wives and children and servants all over the place and having nothing to do with the plot. The means Edmond uses to gain revenge are ridiculously complex and almost impossible to follow. And the ending is disgustingly sappy.
