Notes:To rescue 1,200 soldiers from a Greek island, the British have to get past the guns on the island of Navarone that control the strait. A special task force of five men, led by expert mountain climber Keith Mallory, are sent to the island to destroy them. They land in a storm and one of the men is severely injured. As they cross the island, the Germans pursue, and at one point capture them. They manage to overpower the guards and escape. Two local Greeks join them, but eventually the British force discovers that one of the Greeks is passing info to the Germans. They kill him. Closely pursued, the injured man stays behind and fires at the Germans so the others can escape. Eventually, they manage to sneak into the fortress, blow up the guns, and escape.

Reviews for The Guns of Navarone

Review - Guns of Navarone, The

I read this book once a year as a kid and loved it every time.

I reread it again (10/21) because I just re-watched the movie. I expected to be a little disappointed in the quality of the writing, but I was pleasantly surprised. The plot is a little far-fetched, but exciting and well-written. Of course, having just watched the movie, I couldn't help seeing Gregory Peck as Mallory and Anthony Quinn as Andrea.
