| Notes: | Charles Surface is an extravagant but good-hearted young man. His brother Joseph, supposedly more respectable, is shown to be a conniving schemer who courts Lady Teazle, the young wife of a wealthy old nobleman. Sir Oliver Surface, their uncle, disguises himself to discover which of his nephews shall be his heir. COMMENTS — Sheridan was a very popular playwright, but at the age of 30, he quit writing. He purchased the Drury Lane theater and served as member of Parliament for 32 years. He was recognized as a great orator, but never achieved much influence because he had a reputation for intrigue. He died poor after he lost his seat and his theater burned down. |
