| Notes: | Number 6 (of 11) in the Horatio Hornblower series. The Admiralty has commanded Captain Hornblower and his 36-gun HMS Lydia to form an alliance with an insane Spanish landowner against the Spanish colonial government of Nicaragua. He also has to find a water route across the Central American isthmus and “to take, sink, burn or destroy” the 50-gun Spanish ship of the line Natividad or face court-martial. A daunting enough set of orders, even if Hornblower were not woefully distracted by the passenger he is obliged to take on in Panama: Lady Barbara Wellesley. COMMENTS — Beat to Quarters was the first book of a trilogy, the others being Ship of the Line and Flying Colors. These three books were the first Hornblower novels. Forester later wrote eight other sequels and prequels to cover Hornblower’s entire career in the British Navy. |
