Notes:In the first of Ian Fleming's James Bond books. Bond is sent to France to gamble against Le Chiffre, a Russian agent who has used Soviet money to finance his lifestyle and is now desperate to make the money back before his bosses find out. If Bond can ruin him financially, the Communists in France will receive a severe set-back. Bond is teamed with Vesper Lynd, a beautiful woman who works in the British secret service. Bond defeats Le Chiffre, but then Vesper is kidnapped and Bond goes in pursuit. It's a set up, and he is captured and tortured. He only escapes because SMERSH (the Russian agency that controls its spies) shows up and kills Le Chiffre for spending the funds. Bond is allowed to live because the agent had no instructions about him. He recovers, with Vesper standing by to help. They fall in love, but there is a wall between them. She finally decides she can't take the stress and admits to him that she is a double agent. She loves him but knows he won't love her after her confession so she commits suicide. Bond determines to go after SMERSH.

Review - Casino Royale

This was the first James Bond novel. I read it years ago, but decided to reread it because it's coming out as a movie in a few months. I gave it a 7 the first time and again this time. Fleming is great at describing atmosphere — the food, the clothing, the cars. The story is interesting for the first half, then drags the rest of the way, but the book is only 144 pages long so it wasn't a major investment of time.
