Notes:The title of the book refers to John Laroche, an orchid nurseryman who was arrested for taking orchids from the state-owned Fakahatchee Strand Preserve in Florida. Also arrested were three Seminole Indians. Laroche's nursery was on Indian land, and he figured he could get away with this theft by claiming that the Indians had right to collect wherever they wanted. A judge disagreed.

From there, Orleans expands to talk about orchid collectors in general, their greenhouses and shows and the obsession that drives them. She talks about men who travel to remote corners of the earth to search for rare species. She also discusses Florida, Seminoles, Florida housing developments and a variety of other subjects that had little to do with orchids.

Review - Orchid Thief, The

In fact, although the book was interesting, she seemed to wander off the track a lot. Laroche gets mentioned from time to time but only figures on rare occasions. Which was fine, because his quotes were laced with profanity (which was absent from the rest of the book). I would have liked to know more about orchids and how they're grown and hybridized and cloned, and pictures would have helped a great deal. But it was well-written throughout.
