Ralph Moody was eight years old in 1906 when his family moved from New Hampshire to a Colorado ranch. Through his eyes we experience the pleasures and perils of ranching there early in the twentieth century. Auctions and roundups, family picnics, irrigation wars, tornadoes and wind storms give authentic color to Little Britches. So do adventures, wonderfully told, that equip Ralph to take his father's place when it becomes necessary. This is the first in a series of autobiographical books by Moody.

Review - Little Britches

Life was certainly different in 1906. Ralph worked hard, not just for his parents, but for neighboring ranchers, and was allowed a freedom to grow and explore that is amazing in light of today's culture. His father was a moral man who did what he could to raise his family to share his values and faced hardship with courage. Even if some of the events have been embelished for dramatic effect, this is still a very good book.
