Notes:A look at what makes a good test pilot and, later, an astronaut. It starts with Chuck Yeager and the other pilots of the first rocket planes, continues through the selection of the first seven astronauts and then tells of their spaceflights in the Mercury program. It also delves into their thinking, the behavior out of the spotlight and the effect their careers had on their wives.

Some of it was interesting. The parts about piloting the rocket planes and setting the Mach records got old quickly, as did the long stretches where Wolfe got caught up in his own cleverness as a writer and took way to long to say, for example, that one of the astronauts got scared for a minute.
