Review - Dead Man's Ransom
Good pacing — slow, but the story kept moving with a lot going on and good characters.

| Notes: | The Sheriff of Shrewsbury is wounded in battle and captured by the Welsh. He is exchanged for Elis, a young man of good standing. But complications arise. Elis, while prisoner in Shrewsbury, falls in love with Malicent, the sheriff's daughter. When the sheriff is discovered murdered in his bed, the suspicion falls on Elis who would not have been allowed to marry Malicent while her father lived. Brother Cadfael investigates and discovers the culprit is Eliud, Elis's foster-brother, who wants Elis to marry Malicent so he, in turn, can marry Cristina (who was engaged to Elis as a youth). With Cadfael's silent consent, Eliud is allowed to return to Wales and Elis marries Malicent. |
