Notes:The thirteenth Cadfael mystery. Judith is a young, wealthy, attractive widow who is besieged by men wanting to marry her. She gave part of her property to the abbey in exchange for one rose from the property each year. A young monk, in love with her, goes to pick the rose and is found dead. The next day, Judith herself disappears. Then one of her suitors is found drowned. It's all very complicated, but in the end, Cadfael discovers that Judith's cousin is responsible for the murders because he is the heir to her fortune. Judith's disappearance was caused by another man who wanted to force her into marriage. She is rescued by Niall, the bronzesmith, who also loves her, and she, finally, realizes she loves him in return.

Reviews for The Rose Rent

Review - Rose Rent, The

Excellent writing, and the characters of Judith, Niall and, of course, Cadfael, are fantastic. Niall reminded me of Diggory Venn from The Return of the Native. The plot, with the multiple suitors and the kidnapping, got too complicated, but the ending was grand.
