Notes:When Brother Haluin falls off a roof and almost dies, he determines to confess his past sins. When young, he fell in love with Bertrade and got her pregnant. Bertrade's mother refused to let them marry. She convinced Haluin to help her get the ingredients to force an abortion and, a short time later, told him that Bertrade and the child had died. Haluin joined the brotherhood, but now vowed to return and spend a night's vigil before her grave. Cadfael goes along to help the now-crippled man. They discover that Bertrade didn't die. She's now a sister in a monastery. The child, a daughter, is in love with a young man that she thinks is her half-brother. But this isn't true if Haluin is her father, which Cadfael soon determines is true. The young couple marry. Haluin goes back to the abbey free from the guilt over Bertrade's death and Bertrade continues her ministry joyed that her old love, and how her daughter, are content.

Review - Confession of Brother Haluin, The

OK. The mystery wasn't solved so much as it just unwound around Cafael. Unlike most of Peters' Cadfael books, there really wasn't a character here to root for much, except, perhaps Haluin whom I didn't sympathize with much.
