Notes:Elave accompanied his master on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. On the way home, the master died. He asked two things of of Elave — that he would bring his body to be buried in his home town and that he would deliver a package to his adopted granddaughter, Fortunata. When Elave returns, he and Fortunata fall in love. Aldwin, a servant in the house, thinks Elave will take his position, so he denounces him for heresy. Aldwin is then killed. Elave is suspected. But Cadfael investigates and proves the boys innocence. He thinks the murder had more to do with the package. It turns out that Fortunata's uncle discovered the package held a valuable book and killed Aldwin because he knew it too. In the end, the uncle dies protecting the book from a fire. The book is saved and given to the church. Elave and Fortunata marry.
