Notes:George Talboys marries the beautiful but poor Helen and is disowned by his father. Concerned that he can't care for his wife and son, George takes off for Australia to make his fortune. When he returns three years later, he discovers that his wife is dead. Or is she? A beautiful young woman with a mysterious past has just married the wealthy Mr. Audley — an amazing coincidence since Audley's nephew, Robert, is George's best friend. This leads to George's discovery of his wife's new identity. When he confronts her, she pushes him down a well and things him dead. His disappearance prompts Robert to investigate and, finally, discover the truth. He confronts the woman and, after she makes an attempt on his own life, she confesses all. He tells his uncle, then carts the woman off to an insane asylum where she conveniently dies a year or so later. George reemerges alive and well. Robert marries George's lovely sister and all is right with the world.

Review - Lady Audley's Secret

There was a fairly interesting 100-page novelette hidden here somewhere. But the long string of amazing coincidences, the goofy dialogue and the misplaced descriptions (one of which was so out of place that the author had to interject and explain where in the book it should have occurred) made it tough slogging at times. I had figured out the plot in its entirety very early on and had to slog though pages where something I already knew was slowly unfolded in a manner that was intended to be suspenseful but wasn't.
