Notes:Lena Grove, eight months pregnant, sets off to search for Burch, the father of her child. On the way, she meets Byron, a lonely millworker who falls in love with her. He knows where Burch is — he's bootlegging with a man named Christmas (who's conflicted by his mixed racial heritage) from an old plantation in the woods. Christas is sleeping with the woman who owns the plantation. When she determines to end their relationship, Christmas stabs her and flees. He's caught and put to death. Lena has her baby, but when Burch finds out that she's in town he runs away. Lena sets out in pursuit, with Byron along to protect her. (It's revealed at the end of the story that Lena plans on settling down with Byron in time but is still pretending to look for Burch because she's enjoying traveling for the first time in her life. There's also a failed preacher named Hightower who obsessed with his Confederate grandfather, but try as Faulker would, he couldn't really connect him to the story much.

Review - Light in August

If Faulkner had stuck to the story of Lena's search for Burch, with Byron tagging along like a puppy, it would have been a pretty good story. But most of the book was about Christmas, which wasn't at all interested, and the parts about Hightower seemed to belong in another book.
