Notes:The story of the Macauley family, of Ithaca, California, during the early years of World War II. Mr. Macauley is dead a few years. Oldest brother Marcus is a soldier. Fourteen-year-old Homer gets a job as a telegram messenger. He has to deliver death notices and is confronted with the realities of life. Four-year-old Ulysses just wanders and observes. Other family members and neighbors enter the story. At the end of the book, the Macauley's get a notice that Marcus is dead, but that same day Tobey, a orphan soldier who befriended Marcus and had never met the family or been to town, shows up and moves in — and life goes on.

Review - Human Comedy, The

Saroyan's writing style seems a bit undeveloped. The plot, with the family and town dealing with the war, was interesting, but Saroyan's answer to life, which is woven through the story through the lives of several of the characters, was just wrong. He believes that men are all essentially good and that each of us lives in all of us so that death is just part of life as long as somebody remembers. At the end of the book, when Marcus dies, his family just shrugs and accepts Tobey in his place.
