Notes:In 1912, two dozen men on a Russian ship found themselves frozen into the Arctic ice. Eleven of them tried to walk out under the leadership of Albanov. For about three months, they struggled across the ice, dealing with cold, lack of food and attacks from walruses. Two of them, Albanov and Konrad, made it to a hut on Northbrook Island in the Franz Josef Archipelago. A short time later, they were rescued by a Russian steamer that had, itself, been caught in the ice for two years.

Review - In the Land of the White Death

It was written in the form of a diary, but had obviously been "enhanced" before publication. I think it would have been better as either a raw diary or a more filled-out memoir. As it was, it teetered somewhat between brief and eloquent and was uneven as a result. But the story was a good one and kept my interest — and made me cold.
