Notes:In 1963, a large American expedition climbed Everest. Most of the group climbed by the route used by previous climbers, but two of them, Hornbein and Will Unsoeld climbed a new route up the West Ridge of Everest. They reached the summit a sundown and realized their route up was too difficult to descend. The continued over the summit and climbed down the other side, meeting members of their team on the way down.

Review - Everest: The West Ridge

The story was mildly interesting, but the book wasn't. The copy I read was huge, like a coffee table book, with photographs, about half of which were interesting. Much of it was taken up by every quote the editor could find from any source whatsoever that happened to include the word "mountain." Even Hornbein's account was frequently interrupted by verbatim conversations the expedition members had about choices they had to make.

One member of the expedition was killed early on when a wall of ice fell on him. Two others had severe frostbite and had to have toes amputated. I still don't get why anyone things it's worthwhile to climb an already-climbed mountain.
