Notes:Catlin trained as a lawyer and worked as a portrait painter in Philadelphia when he dropped everything and dedicated seven years to traveling about the West observing and painting Indians in their natural setting before their culture was changed by advancing civilization. He took note of their food, their clothing, their tribal culture, dances, religion and, while not excusing their vices, defended them against their accusers.

Review - Letters and Notes on the Manners, Customs and Conditions of the North American Indians

Undoubtedly an invaluable reference work, it makes for a tedious read, mostly because of Catlin's writing style. He frequently explains what he's going to write about before writing about it. He repeats himself often, and he occasionally takes off on flights of fancy during which I have no idea what he was trying to say because his sentences are half a page long.

Having said that, there was a lot of fascinating information, and His account of the hospitality and bravery of the Indians were interesting.
