Review - Destiny of the Republic

Well-written. It gets off to a slow start, but is interesting for most of the way. The story of Alexander Graham Bell's invention was a tangent, mostly because Garfield's stupid doctor, Dr. D. Willard Bliss, wouldn't let him search the part of Garfield's body where the bullet actually was. Bliss's conceited and stubborn incompetence was the chief cause of the President's death. Garfield wasn't president long enough to have much of a legacy, but the book paints him as an honorable man. His V.P. Arthur, was a worthless toady before the assassination, but rose to the occasion and became a solid President. Guiteau was almost certainly insane, but no less of a public danger because of that. He should have been imprisoned or institutionalized long before this time.
