Notes:A Russian emigrant who use to work with Smiley in the secret service in England is found murdered. Smiley is called out of retirement to investigate. He finds out that the man had received a letter from a Russian woman in Paris who had been told her daughter was being brought out of Russia to live with her. When the daughter didn't arrive, she got concerned. Smiley followed the trail and discovered that Karla, head of the Russian secret service, had a daughter with mental problems in an asylum in Switzerland and was using Russian resources to have here cared for. Smiley uses the information to force him to defect.

Review - Smiley's People

Le Carre's books amble along, never in a hurry. At times I think I've lost the plot, but then it becomes clear again. There are brief patches of excellent writing, and all of it is good. This one took a long time to get to where it was going, but it also kept my interest.
