Notes:Mark Watney is one of six astronauts on a mission to Mars. When a dust storm threatens to destroy their base, they decide to evacuate. Mark is hit by a piece of wind-blown debris that knocks out his communicator. His crew mates believe he's dead, and pressed for time, they leave. Mark comes to and has to find a way to survive on the base until he can be rescued. NASA finds out he's alive from a satellite photo. The only way to save him before he runs out of food is if his crew stays on their craft, rockets around earth and returns. Meanwhile, Mark has to find a way to equip the rover to take him halfway across Mars to a craft staged for a future mission. He makes it and launches in the very small window that allows him to reunite with his crew and make it back to earth.

Review - Martian, The

The basic story was exciting, but much of the telling involved science that was pretty dull and that I didn't bother taking the time to understand. In addition, the author was very proud that he knew a lot of swear words. The fourth word in the book was profanity, as was the ninth. It went on like that for quite a while, although once the story got going the pace slowed a bit. All of them were entirely gratuitous. That alone knocked the book down a full rating.
