Notes:Sympathetic biography of a good (but probably not great) baseball player who had one amazing season. Because of his straightforward, understated, and blunt personality, he was never embraced by Yankee fans until long after he retired. He also had to misfortune to be in the spotlight at the time when sports reporting was more about tearing players down than building them up.

Review - Roger Maris: Baseball's Reluctant Hero

Regarding his career, I don' t think Maris belongs in the Hall of Fame. Excepting 1961, his stats would scarcely be remembered today. As a person, I think he probably got a raw deal. He was liked by those who knew him well but disliked by reporters because he didn't always give them what they wanted. The picture of Maris in the press gave the public its opinion. He had a good marriage, six well-behaved kids, and many friends. He died at 51 from cancer from smoking.
