Notes:Subtitle: The Legend of Mr. Cub, the Life of Ernie Banks

Banks came from a poor family in Dallas with 12 kids. He was shy, but excelled at sports. He played in the Negro Leagues before signing with the Cubs. After he retired in '71, he bounced around various jobs but mostly acted as an ambassador for the Cubs. He died in 2014. Along the way he had four marriages, all of which ended poorly. He was estranged from his twin sons. He didn't like to talk about himself, but everyone who met him thought he was a nice guy.

Review - Let's Play Two

From what I saw of Ernie, I always suspected that there wasn't a whole lot of "there" there. He was a simple, friendly, quiet guy who happened to be able to play baseball well and who learned to hide his loneliness and insecurity. There wasn't much in the book about his personal life—his last two wives are hardly mentioned—but I got the feeling his family life was lousy because he ran from any sort of confrontation or any attempt to get him to be personal.
