Notes:A story of a towboat trip pushing eight barges up the Mississippi during a flood. It's from the point of view of Duke Snyder, Mate, although it gives the stories of several other crew members. When the tow is tied up during fog, one of the barges sinks. Then they rescue a girl, Marie, from the roof of her flooded house. Duke falls for her. When the boat loses steering, it drifts downstream and crashes into a bridge and sinks. Duke gets a life jacket on Marie and manages himself to get to shore. He gets pneumonia, and when he recovers he decides he's done with life on the river and wants to settle down. He hunts up Marie and they get married.

Review - High Water

Some great writing. The character of Duke was a bit of a moral scum, but the story was interesting and exciting.
