Notes:At the start of WWII, Winslow Greene is an introverted engineer working for a gold mining company in South America. He travels to the port city to pick up Henrietta Simmons, the new secretary, and they unexpectedly fall in love. Greene hears rumors about a German ship waiting for oil offshore. He thinks little of it and soon goes off into the jungle to search for gold. When he returns to the mine, his boss tells him to fire Henrietta because she's making the other wives jealous. In a huff, Henrietta leaves for the coast with a German named Bauer. The next day, Greene also heads for the coast with a shipment of gold. He's attacked on the way and knocked unconscious. When he comes to, he's on a boat about to deliver the gold to the Germans. He thinks quickly and manages to kill Bauer, then works out a plot with Henrietta in which he gives the Germans the gold but also sends them to the secret police in the port where they are captured. The German ship is sunk and Greene and Henrietta get married.

Review - It's Loaded Mr. Bauer

Quickly read and mildly amusing. The characters, apart from Greene, aren't really flushed out. The romance with Henrietta is typical spy novel stuff—they fall in love almost immediately, quarrel because they don't take the time to listen to each other, then together manage to foil the plot of the bad guys and fall back in love, even though they still don't know anything about each other except that they don't communicate very well.
