Notes:The adventures of Herbie Bookbinder, age 11, who lives in the Bronx. He's chubby and not at all athletic, but he's smart and has skipped a few grades. He has a crush on the spoiled Lucille and frequent fights with his rival Lennie. Much of the book takes place at summer camp, where Herbie is an outsider until he comes up with a plan for a great ride for the fair. Unfortunately, to build the ride, he has to borrow $50 from his father's safe. He eventually confesses his misdeed, but when he was taking the money, he overheard his father's business partner trying to sell the company. Herbie is able to save the business for his father and comes out a hero after all.

Review - City Boy

Amusing story about a modern-day Tom Sawyer—good at heart but frequently in trouble. The bit about two 11-year-old boys hitchhiking to New York and robbing a safe was a bit much, but it's fiction, right?
