Notes:An ex-cop turned private detective blackmails Dortmunder and his gang into trying to steal a gold chess set from a bank vault for a millionaire. The figure the job is impossible, so they find a way to get the owners to bring it out of the vault for inspection and steal it then. Their plan is to paint it red so the millionaire can hide it in plain sight, then steal the pieces one-by-one from him while replacing them with fakes. They get the set, but then have it stolen by a couple kids in a stolen car. The police, not realizing the value of the red-painted set, donate it to an old-folks home.

This one didn't really move me much. Too many characters that had nothing to do with the plot and not a very exciting plot to begin with.
