A group of men, formerly of Harvard, employ Nero Wolfe and his assistant Archie to protect them from Paul Chapin. When they were in college, a prank resulted in Chapin being crippled. They had banded together to try to make amends but were convinced that Chapin was killing them one by one. Wolfe proves that the first two who died did so accidentally but Chapin decided to get back at the rest by writing notes warning them they were next. He wasn't upset at being crippled but at being pitied. A third member of the group disappears, but Wolfe proves he was just hiding from Chapin. A fourth is murdered and Chapin is framed, but Wolfe proves the actual murderer was another member of the group who had swindled the dead man's money.

Review - League of Frightnened Men, The

I tried to like it, but I find mysteries that spend all their time trying to lead me in the wrong direction simply a waste of time. In addition, most of them, this one included, have too many characters to keep track of, most of them only along for the ride to create red herrings. With a very few exceptions, read one mystery and you've read them all.
