The author, a newspaper humor columnist, lives in Manhattan and loves it. His wife decides she wants to live in the country, so she buys and old farmhouse in the Catskills, three hours north of the city. They begin to spend their weekends there. At first, everything about the country seems weird, but gradually it grows on them. Finally, after five years, they sell their apartment in NYC and live in the country full time.
