In 1903, a Vermont doctor named Horatio Nelson Jackson and his mechanic, Sewall Crocker, drove from San Francisco to New York in a Winton automobile. They made the trip on a $50 bet, and achieved the feat in 63 days, including several in which they were stuck in various towns waiting for parts.

Review - Horatio's Drive

The chapters on Jackson and his trip make for a good adventure story, if one without a great deal of adventure beyond mechanical problems and bad roads. The opening and closing chapters in which Burns and Duncan try to say something significant about America and road trips were just wasted space.
