Notes:James Orlebar Cloyster is an aspiring writer. He's in love with Margaret, who lives on Guernsey. James heads to London and finds success as a writer, but decides he no longer loves Margaret and decides to put her off by hiding his success so she thinks he doesn't have the money to marry. On the advice of his friend Julian, he picks three acquaintances and has them publish his work under his own name. Then he meets Eva, Julian's old girlfriend and proposes to her. Needed her and her family to know he's a success, he takes back his work from his three ghostwriters. By then, they'd gotten use to the income and so begin writing on their own, stealing James' market for his work and leaving him too poor to marry Eva. Meanwhile, Margaret, in an attempt to help James, writes a play under his name. It becomes a huge hit. James takes the credit for the work, and marries Margaret, with whom he is again in love. Julian, inspired by James pre-ghostwriters success, becomes a successful ad writer and marries Eva.

Review - Not George Washington

Early and not-typical Wodehouse. The humor is more understated. The title comes from the fact that all of the characters, except Margaret, are self-serving and dishonest in the extreme.
