Notes:John Leigh, poor teenage orphan, is sent to the country to live with his uncle. While wandering the countryside, he meets Diana, daughter of a wealthy investor, and falls in love with her. He realizes that class distinctions stand between them, so he does what he can to better himself—working as a reporter on another uncle's paper, learning riding and French. Diana keeps leaving or being taken away by her parents, but whenever she returns, they get back together. They become lovers, and when Diana turns 21, they are about to marry. But her father's business fails and he commits suicide, Diana runs off to France and marries a wealthy man. When WWII begins, John goes to France and oversees the evacuation. Diana shows up, tells him she's going to stay and fight for the resistance, then gives him Yvonne, the daughter John never knew they'd had. There's a sequel, sometimes included with the first book, in which John and Diana join the resistance and go on a secret mission to kidnap Diana's husband, who is working for the Nazis. Diana is injured. John marries her, and then she dies.

Review - Diana

Diana was totally unreliable and manipulative. It was hard to understand why John became so enchanted by her that he allowed her to dominate his entire life. I know I didn't care for her much and found myself rooting that he would find another girl. I only made it about a quarter way through the sequel. I realized I was looking for reasons not to read it, so I jumped to the end and quit.
