Notes:After Lily loses her brother, house, and husband at the beginning of WWII, she goes off to the country to live with her Grandma. She gets work on a farm with her friends Dotty and Fiona. And then the book gets really ridiculous. Lily is suddenly given charge of a huge estate owned by the dashing Edward, Earl of Middlebourne. Within days, she changes if from a failing concern to a raging success. The estate is then turned into a secret H.Q. tasked with planning D-Day, and Lily is the one who chooses all the planners and makes all the important decisions. Fiona is soon brought on as an assistant and Dotty is hired as an agent to go behind enemy lines and kill generals. Lily falls in love with Edward and also with Greg, who is the estate manager. It's the first in a series, so how it all pans out, I'll never know.

Review - None Stood Taller

I skimmed the second half once I realized just how ridiculous it all was. Lily, poor girl from the east end of London, was beautiful, smart, desirable, instantly commanded respect from all who met her, sang like a professional opera singer. She was also good buddies with Churchill. In short, she was perfect. And extraordinarily unrealistic and annoying. All I can say is that it's a very good thing someone like Lily didn't really run the entire war. I will not be reading other books in the series.
