Notes:Theresa is a divorced columnist living in Boston with her 12-year-old son. While vacation on Cape Cod, she finds a bottle with a letter written by Garrett, a scuba instructor in North Carolina, to his dead wife, Catherine. Theresa falls in love with the idea of Garrett, travels to North Carolina and seduces him. They have a fling for a week and decide they love each other. They try a long-distance affair, but it doesn't satisfy either of them, especially since Garrett still loves Catherine. Then he finds his letter to Catherine in Theresa's house and thinks he's been lied to. He takes off in a huff. She follows, seduces him again, then dumps him. He decides he wants her back and is even willing to move to Boston, but first he goes out in his sailboat to send one last letter to Catherine via bottle. He gets caught in a storm and drowns. A few days later, Theresa receives a letter that Garrett sent her just before he died expressing his love and his intent to move to Boston. She's all sad and stuff, but glad she had him for a time.

Review - Message in a Bottle

Two annoying people with nothing in common except sex make a series of annoying decisions until one of them dies. This was my first Sparks novel, and it will likely be my last. He didn't make me like either of the main characters. He filled the book with redundant descriptions of how deeply they cared for each other. Nothing even happened until the storm at the end, in which Garrett's last thought was that, since he was out boating in a storm, he should have been wearing a life jacket and had his survival kit handy.
