| Notes: | The opening sentence ofThe Metamorphosis has become one of the most famous in Western literature. “As Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy dreams he found himself transformed in his bed into a gigantic insect.” [Don’t you hate it when that happens?] Forced by his tyrannical father to hide in his bedroom, Gregor suffers from his family’s neglect and his own guilty despair. COMMENTS — Kafka worked for Worker’s Accident Insurance during the day and wrote at night — often all night. His relationship to his loud, outgoing, dictatorial father is reflected in many of his works. |
