Notes:Our Mutual Friend is about money, money, money and what money can make of life. A mysterious inheritance, a bitter love triangle and a cast of characters that range from the highest to the lowest social levels are woven into a tale that presents an indictment of a society fallen prey to the spirit of the commercial age. And at the same time, the book contains some of Dickens’ funniest scenes.

COMMENTS — This was the last novel Dickens completed. He was half way through another one, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, when he died. It is said he decided to write a mystery because of the success Wilkie Collins was having with the genre. If half-finished novels don’t appeal to you, consider reading The D. Case: The Truth About the Mystery of Edwin Drood, by Carlo Fruttero and Franco Lucentini. The greatest detectives of fiction gather to determine what happened to Edwin. The entire text of Edwin Drood is included, interspersed with speculations by the detectives. At the end of the book, they solve the mystery of Edwin and another one on top of it.

Review - Our Mutual Friend

Fantastic. Great characters, great atmosphere and great plot. Laugh-out-loud funny in many places, particularly in regards to Eugene who didn't want to be a lawyer and spent his time lolling about making jokes. Reading doesn't get any better than this.
