| Notes: | Howard is an old English gentleman who is stranded in France at when the German invade at the start of WWII. The book tells the story of his journey back to England, accompanied by an ever-increasing band of orphaned and stranded children and helped by Nicole, a young woman who was engaged to Howard's son who was killed in the early days of the war. He makes it back to England when a Gestapo officer lets him leave in exchange for taking the officer's young niece with him. |
