Review - Planes, Trains and Automobiles

Why I saw it: I had a head cold and just wanted to sit without moving. We bought this about six months ago and I’d never gotten around to watching it.

Brief Synopsis: Neal Page is in New York on business and wants to catch a flight home. Thanksgiving is in two days and he has plans with his family. His plane is delayed, and he keeps crossing paths with Del Griffith, a traveling salesman specializing in shower curtain rings. Del is a talkative, annoying fat man who drives Neal crazy. When their plane is rerouted to Wichita, the two men end up sharing a hotel room for the night. Their attempts to get to Chicago take two days — car accidents, train breakdowns, bus rides, hitchhiking. Neal repeatedly tries to rid himself of Del but can never do so for long. When they finally get to Chicago, Neal takes off for home, leaving Del at an El station. But then Neal realizes that Del has nowhere to spend Thanksgiving and returns and invites him home.

What I liked about it: Great characters and funny situations.

What I didn’t like about it: The many profanities give it an R rating, making the TV version more palatable.

Bottom line: I gave it an 8 this time, although it rated higher the first time I saw it. Or it would have if I was rating then. It’s one of Sally’s favorites.
