Once we figure out that the thing killing all the people (about 15 minutes into the movie) is giant ants, the film gets pretty dull. Most of it consists of a scientist (Edmund Gwenn — Santa from Miracle on 34th Street) talking about how humanity is about to be wiped out and a cop (James Whitmore) and an FBI agent (James Arness) talking about how to find them. The ants themselves aren't all that impressive — for the most part they just wave their antennae and give a high-pitched squeak. The final nest is tracked down in the sewers of L.A., the only part of the movie I remember from when I saw it as a kid.
