Description:After a global nuclear war, the residents of Australia must come to terms with the fact that all life will be destroyed in a matter of months. The story centers on Dwight Towers (Gregory Peck), commander of a U.S. submarine stranded in Australia. He meets Moira (Ava Gardner), but can't forget his wife (even though he realizes she must be dead back in the U.S.). Only after taking a trip to San Diego to trace a mysterious radio signal is he able to love Moira> Other characters include Julian (Fred Astaire), a scientist who pursues his dream of entering a car race, and Peter (Anthony Perkins), a young Australian naval officer whose wife can't cope with impending doom.

Certainly not a cheery movie, but a good character study and one that makes you think about the stupidity of war.
