Description:Opal (Anna Sophia Robb) moves with her preacher father (Jeff Daniels) — his wife, her mother abandoned them when Opal was three — to the small Florida town of Naomi. Opal is lonely until she happens upon a large, shaggy stray dog wrecking havoc in the Winn-Dixie grocery store. She adopts the dog, and the two become inseparable. They soon begin meeting the town’s misfits: Gloria (Cicely Tyson), an old blind woman who the town kids think is a witch; Otis (Dave Matthews), the slow pet shop manager who plays his guitar to soothe the animals; Miss Franny (Eva Marie Saint), the lonely librarian; Amanda, a girl about Opal’s age who is saddened by the death of her brother. As the summer advances, the girl and her dog bring joy to the preacher and the others and bring them together as friends.

Review - Because of Winn-Dixie

I saw this at Showplace 16 with my daughter.

It was good, but not as cute as it tried to be. It didn’t avoid the issues that make people unhappy, but on the other hand, a dog and a 10-year old girl, no matter how cute, aren’t going to solve the world’s problems.
