Description:A D.C. reporter, Cal McAffrey (Russell Crowe) is investigating two deaths in an alley. A blog writer for the same newspaper, Della Frye (Rachel McAdams) is investigating the death of a woman who works for Congressman Stephen Collins (Ben Affleck). The dead woman was helping the congressman investigate a private security firm subcontracting for the military, but the reporters' investigation discovers that she was really working for the security company and had deliberately infiltrated the congressman's staff. The case is almost sewn up, and the story is being written when McAffrey realizes he's being played. He confronts Collins (who was his roommate in college) and gets him to confess to having the girl (and three other people) killed to cover himself.

Review - State of Play

The plot was a great deal more complicated than my quick review makes it sound. Russell Crowe and Rachel McAdams were excellent in their roles. The suspense was tight throughout, and the plot made you think — both to figure out what was going on and to wonder about the state of politics and reporting.
