Description:As the movie opens, an old man (James Garner) reads a love story to an old woman (Gina Rowlands) in a retirement home. It's obvious that the woman has lost her memory. The love story is about a rich girl named Allie (Rachel McAdams) who summers in the south and meets a poor country boy named Nathan (Ryan Gosling). They fall in love, but Allie's parents take her away at the end of the summer. Nathan writes, but his letters aren't answered. He goes off to war. Allie joins the nursing corps and meets Lon (James Marsdan). They get engaged, but then Allie sees Nathan's photo in the paper. He has bought an old house and restored it, just as he told her he would seven years earlier. She takes off and meets him and they fall in love again. Of course, the old couple are Nathan and Allie at the end of their lives. Allie regains her memory in time for the two to die in each other's arms.

Review - Notebook, The

Rachel McAdams was stunning and convincing. Ryan Gosling was OK as a 17-year-old, but seemed poorly cast for his role seven years later. He looked like a 17-year-old in a fake beard. The old people story was a nice plot device, but I'm glad it didn't take up any more of the story.
