Description:Miguel "Sugar" Santos is a pitcher in an instructional league in the Dominican Republic. He gets called up to spring training and sent to a Rookie League team in Iowa. He lives with a white, Christian family that only speaks English. The movie centers on Sugar's difficulties adjusting to the culture. When he comes back from an injury, he's lost zip on his fastball and his control. He decides not to wait to get let go, but hops a bus for New York and gets a job as a dishwasher in the Hispanic community. The movie ends with him working hard at the restaurant, living with a Puerto Rican couple (the man's a carpenter who builds furniture with Miguel) and playing semi-pro ball.

Review - Sugar

Certainly not a cliche. Miguel's success isn't in baseball but in life. He manages to make the adjustment to a new culture and find a niche where he's happy. It was a quirky movie, but I liked it.
