Description:Maj. Thorn (Gary Cooper) behaves cowardly in battle and is set aside as an Awards Officer. He travels with the expedition against Pancho Villa in 1916, looking for men deserving of the Medal of Honor. He picks five and heads back to the base at Cordura with them so they can be heroes for the coming enlistment drive for WWI. Along with them is Adelaide Geary (Rita Hayworth) convicted of abetting the enemy. During the hard trip, the group is attacked by Mexicans. The men turn against Thorn, but he drives them and himself. Their adventures show the "heroes" to be cowards, rapists, murders and thieves and show Thorn to be courageous. Adelaide scorns him at first but comes to admire him. At the end, when the men have a chance to kill Thorn, they realize what they've become and head into Cordura with him.

Review - They Came to Cordura

Rita Hayworth's performance was great as a jaded woman worn out by life. The plot was formulaic and contrived, but it got across the point it was attempting to show.
