She goes to his house for tutoring and is confronted by his wife Kay (Gene Tierney) about her feelings. Barbara flees and Stephen follows, calling the girl to meet him. When she disappears, the rumors fly and suspicion falls on Stephen. Kay wants to believe him, but when he lies to her about phoning the girl, she doesn't know what to think. Stephen is called into the police station and questioned, but the girl shows up at her parents' unharmed and corroborates his story. Kay doesn't get the news and contemplates suicide but remembers her vow to stick with him and pauses just as Stephen comes up and gives her the good news.

Review - Personal Affair

Interesting movie, although nothing actually happens. There's a lot of close up shots of dark water and dark clouds and close ups of worried faces and dramatic music and shots of cemeteries, all to lead us to believe Barbara is dead. But she isn't and she didn't have an affair with her teacher because he loves his wife, just as he's been saying all along. The acting was good, Walter Fitzgerald as Barbara's father was especially excellent. Pamela Brown is weird as her Aunt Evelyn, a bitter, messed-up old maid who wants her niece to be as tragic as she is.
