Description:The three orphaned Geste brothers, Beau (Gary Cooper), John (Ray Milland) and Digby (Robert Preston) are raised by Lady Brandon. When her valuable sapphire jewel is discovered missing, Beau disappears to join the French Foreign Legion. John and Digby follow. Beau and John are stationed together at a North African fort under Rasinoff, a tyrannical officer. When an Arab army attacks, everyone in the fort is killed except the two brothers and Rasinoff. Beau is wounded. Rasinoff searches him and finds the jewel, but John kills him and escapes over the wall. A relief force arrives too late. Digby climbs into the fort and finds Beau's body. He carries it down to the barracks and burns it, then hops over the wall after John. When the officer of the relief force enters the fort, he finds nobody, including Digby. The brothers take off across the desert with two other deserters, but Digby is killed. John makes it back to England with the jewel and a letter to Lady Brandon saying that he knows she sold the jewel and had it replaced with a fake. It was to preserve her honor that he took it and ran off.

Review - Beau Geste

Pretty sappy, but worth watching just to have the opening scene explained — where Digby climbs into the fort and disappears and then his officer climbs in and finds nobody.
